‘It is amazing what a win in championship football can do for the feel good factor of a small town’

I was driving home from Dublin last Sunday evening when my good friend Pat Holmes eventually managed to get through to me on the phone. He could barely talk as his voice was practically gone. Normally, when Pat’s voice is hoarse, things have not gone too well. We had spoken earlier in the morning and I gathered then that he was nervous about playing Crossmolina later in the afternoon. I’m not so sure he was any the better after having spoken with me earlier as all I told him to do was to relax as there was a huge number of Cross lads out injured.

Brasserie on the Corner

Here in the middle of the summer that did not happen, it may seem promises do not count for anything any more. Garden trampoline accidents have now been replaced in the A&E by advanced cases of pneumonia and chronic trenchfoot as the leading summer time ailments (I made that up, but it could be true, couldn’t it?). So if a newly opened restaurant promises “quality steak, seafood, wine, cocktails — and so much more” should we believe it?

Westport keep up lead at the top

image preview

By the end of this weekend, Westport United’s lead at the top of the Super League table will probably be down to seven points as the Covies have no game this weekend. Neither Westport or second placed Ballina Town are in action this weekend and Castlebar Celtic will be able to leapfrog Westport into second place. But the Covies are still red hot favourites to take the title, with the half-way point in their league campaign reached they will have a seven-point lead in their back pocket at the very least by the time they next play in the league. Last weekend Westport were 2-0 winners over Iorras Aontaithe thanks to goals from David Hoban and JP O’Gorman in either half, while Balllina saw off Fahy Rovers by the same score and Castlebar Celtic were made to work hard to come away from Foxford with the points. Castlebar Celtic needed a Ger O’Boyle goal late on to go home with a 3-2 win against the side who are rooted to the bottom of the Super League. Stephen Moyles put Straide and Foxford United in front early on, James Minogue pulled the game level before the break with Stevie Ryan putting Celtic in the lead just after the break. Paul Fitzpatrick levelled the game not long after and it was a close range finish from O’Boyle late on that sealed the win for Celtic.

Mayo shaken awake by Wednesday morning quake

Mayo was “All Shook Up” on Wednesday morning when an off-shore earthquake was felt across large parts of the west and north of the county. The quake which registered four on the Richter Scale, was the second-largest earthquake recorded in either Ireland or Britain after a 5.4 magnitude earthquake in 1984. Wednesday’s off-shore ‘quake was recorded 60km west of Belmullet at a depth of 3km, shortly before 9am. The tremors from the quake were felt well inland, with numerous members of the public reporting objects moving and shaking in homes and others describing the sensation of the earthquake as like a large truck passing very close by.

Aftershocks not expected after quake causes rumble along west coast
